Let me pull back the curtain on something I see every single day as a matchmaker.
And when I say every day, I mean… every. single. day.
Last week, one of my dear friends, who is still out there in the dating app trenches trying to find his soulmate, called me to cry on my shoulder about his last three dates.
He was angry, frustrated and was beyond disappointed, so this became a full emotional support hotline.
All three women showed up looking nothing like their photos.
Not a little different. Not “oh, she changed her hair.” We’re talking full bait-and-switch energy. According to him, they were significantly older, heavier, and carried themselves in a way he described as, well, flat-out “frumpy” was the word he landed on.
Now, before I could even fully lean into my compassion, I did what any good friend and matchmaker would do.
I gave him a flipping hard time.
I said, “Have I taught you nothing? You mean to tell me you didn’t FaceTime before investing an entire evening of your life? We are not out here rolling the dice on first dates in 2026.”
After we finished laughing, and yes, I eventually gave him the sympathy he was fishing for, we had a real conversation about how wildly misleading, or just plain awful, photos on dating sites have become.
But then there are people, like me, who do not take great pictures without a great photographer. And then there are those who just don’t think it matters. But it does.
People will spend thousands of dollars hiring me to find them the love of their life. They want someone they hope to wake up next to for the next 30 years. Some of these photos feel like they were taken the morning after a long night of tequila, zero sleep, hair negotiating its own contract, and someone saying, “Wait… the lighting in this kitchen is good. Let me grab a dating profile pic real quick.”
The Jaw-Dropping Miscalculations
Brady, the photographer I lovingly send my clients to when I want them to look like the best version of themselves, and I once laughed so hard we almost cried. We were swapping war stories about the photos she sees on dating apps, and the ones that cross my desk from singles hoping to join our Inner Circle, and yes, even from clients who have hired Soulmate Quest to find the love of their life.
And people send me the same types of pictures.
I wish I were exaggerating.
I’m not.
I get blurry car selfies. You know the ones, taken from behind the steering wheel like they just remembered they were single at a stoplight.
Bathroom mirror shots featuring toothpaste splatter as a co-star.
Hats and sunglasses in every frame like we’re playing a high stakes round of Guess Who.
Group photos where I genuinely have no idea which human I’m supposed to be evaluating.
Here’s the disconnect.
People think they are choosing photos that show how they look. What they are choosing are photos that show how they see themselves. And sometimes… the miscalculation is jaw-dropping.
Men will send me hunting photos holding a fish like it’s their firstborn child.
Women will send me heavily filtered images where their skin looks like frosted glass.
Listen, I say this with love…
Your future partner is not trying to date your bass or your Instagram filter.
They are trying to date you.
Attraction is emotional, energetic, visual, and psychological.
Your photos are doing far more than showing your face. Your photos are integral in telling a story about your lifestyle, confidence, self-awareness, and effort level.
And effort matters more than you will ever know, for both men and women. Because most people equate the effort you put into your profile with the effort you will put into a relationship.
Fair or not… it’s true.
Why Professional Photography Matters More Than You Think
When my clients invest in professional photos, something powerful happens.
They start seeing themselves differently.
They sit up straighter.
They dress with intention.
They become more aware of how they show up in the world.
Confidence begins before the camera ever clicks.
Professional photography is not about vanity.
It is about alignment.
You are visually communicating:
- I take this process seriously
• I respect myself
• I am emotionally available
• I am ready for partnership
And whether people realize it consciously or subconsciously, they respond to that energy.
What a True Professional Photographer Actually Does
Just because someone owns a camera does not make them a professional photographer.
A true professional photographer, especially in dating and matchmaking, does far more than take flattering pictures.
They take time to understand you.
Who you are.
Who you want to attract.
Where these photos will live.
What story they need to tell.
Are you polished and corporate?
Outdoorsy and grounded?
Playful and social?
Quietly intellectual?
Your photos should reflect the life someone is stepping into if they choose you.
That requires intention.
Details That Shape the Outcome
A professional photo shoot should guide you on the elements that matter most:
Hair & Makeup
Polished, but still you. You should look the same when you walk into the date as you did in the photo.
Clothing
Fit, color, and style signal lifestyle instantly. A tailored blazer and a wrinkled polo tell very different stories.
Location & Setting
Studio or outdoor, the setting shapes mood, tone, and identity. It should never feel random or one-size-fits-all.
Purpose of the Photos
Dating profile, matchmaking portfolio, speaking brand, or social media. The intention behind the images shapes how they are shot.
This is strategy, not just photography.
What I Need as a Matchmaker
When I present a client to a potential match, their photos are often the first emotional impression someone receives.
Before the bio.
Before the conversation.
Before the introduction call.
Photos set the tone.
They can create curiosity… or hesitation.
I have watched incredibly kind, successful, emotionally available people get overlooked simply because their photos undersold them. It breaks my heart every time. Because I know who they really are. And I know how differently they would have been received if their essence had been captured properly.
Enter: My Favorite Photographer, Brady Thomas
I am very intentional about who I send my clients to because in my world, details matter and so do first impressions.
Photography, in my world, is not transactional. It is transformational. And that is why I trust Brady Thomas.
Brady does not just show up with a camera. She shows up with a warm, thoughtful curiosity.
She spends time getting to know the person she is photographing. Their story, their energy, their insecurities, their hopes about love.
She studies their face, posture, and comfort level.
She helps guide:
- Wardrobe selection
• Grooming details
• Shoot locations
• Emotional tone of the images
She is looking to capture the essence of the person, not just their smile. Because the goal is not “good pictures.” The goal is magnetic presence.
Brady does not just take pictures. She captures people the way you would experience them sitting across from you in real life. Authentic, unguarded, and wearing their soul on their sleeve where it belongs.
Warm.
Dynamic.
Attractive.
Approachable.
Real.
And that makes all the difference when I am introducing them to someone special.
If you are serious about finding love, the kind that changes your life trajectory, then how you present yourself matters. This is not about ego, but vulnerability of self.
Think of your photos as your visual warm handshake that says, “I am looking forward to getting to know you.”
Your energetic first impression.
Your silent introduction before you ever speak.
And trust me when I say…
When the right photographer captures the real you, it amplifies your confidence, the warmth in you, the aliveness in you, and people feel it instantly.
And that is when doors start opening.
Love included.
If you are serious about finding love, not just casually browsing it, then how you show up matters more than you think.
Inside my Dating Coaching and Foundations programs, we do the deeper work. We look at patterns, readiness, attraction dynamics, and how you are positioning yourself to meet the right partner, not just any partner.
And when it comes to photos, I always say this, your photographer matters just as much as your mindset. That is why I trust Brady Thomas with my clients. She has a rare ability to make people feel seen, comfortable, and genuinely confident in front of the camera.
If you are ready to step into dating with intention, clarity, and confidence, both Brady and I are here to support you on that journey.
