Not long ago, love didn’t begin with a swipe or a carefully curated dating profile. It began at community dances, church socials, backyard barbecues, and neighborhood gatherings. Friends introduced friends. Parents quietly talked with other parents about possibly introducing their sons and daughters. Neighbors played matchmaker. People met face-to-face, often through someone who already knew their character, values, and life goals.
As a professional matchmaker for more than two decades, I see firsthand how deeply people still crave that kind of meaningful connection. My company helps a few hundred people each year find love and I’m grateful for every success story. But the truth is, even that barely scratches the surface of the enormous need that exists today. No matchmaking company, no matter how dedicated, can replace the powerful role a caring community plays in helping people find their life partner.
Online dating was supposed to make connections easier. Many singles express feeling burned out, discouraged, and disconnected from their online experience. They are done with the endless swiping that has created more options, but not necessarily better outcomes. Many relationship-minded adults are stepping away from dating apps altogether, and the bar scene rarely feels like the right place to meet someone who shares deeper values and long-term intentions.
At the same time, people have simply fallen out of practice when it comes to approaching one another in real life. Fear of rejection, fear of being misunderstood, and social awkwardness have replaced what once felt natural. I meet wonderful, kind, accomplished men and women every day who genuinely want love — yet they are waiting quietly, hoping someone else will make the first move.
This is where our communities can make an extraordinary difference.
Every one of us knows people who would make fantastic partners — friends, family members, coworkers, neighbors. We know their integrity. Their relationship histories. Their hopes for the future. And often, we even know who they might be compatible with. Yet so many people hesitate to make introductions, worried about being intrusive or getting involved.
But small, thoughtful efforts can truly change lives.
A casual introduction at a neighborhood gathering. Sitting two people together at a fundraiser. A simple, kind suggestion: “You two should meet.” These gentle moments create organic, pressure-free opportunities for connection without algorithms, profiles, or endless messaging.
Community also creates safety. When people meet through trusted social circles, there is a natural sense of familiarity and accountability. People show up more authentically. Intentions are clearer. Respect increases. Real relationships have room to grow.
As a matchmaker, I can create introductions. I can guide people. I can facilitate connection. But what I cannot create on my own is a cultural shift. That must come from all of us — from churches, neighborhoods, families, social groups, and friends who care enough to help one another connect.
We don’t need to bring back sock hops or chaperoned dances to revive meaningful connection, but we do need to revive our willingness to care. To host gatherings. To create safe spaces for people to mingle naturally. Making an introduction is not meddling, but an act of kindness.
Love has always thrived in community.
It was never meant to exist only behind screens.
If we truly want stronger relationships, healthier families, and more connected neighborhoods, we must return to being active participants in one another’s lives. Your small effort of just one introduction, one invitation, one gathering, may very well be the beginning of a love story that lasts a lifetime.
And there is no greater gift a community can give.
